Downstairs in the entrance gallery, Mira Hermoni (b. Tel Aviv, 1948), a doctor of biochemistry, shows a series of low-key paintings of gloomy women in a style, dating back to early German expressionism and French fin-de-siecle modernism. The depictions hover between Matissean sophistication and utter naivety particularly in the depiction of hands. But Hermoni has a gift for colour harmony that many of her betters can envy.
